My First Time Out Shooting the Tavor: Back in the Winter of 2011

My First Time Out Shooting the Tavor: Back in the Winter of 2011

I had (and still have) some hard decisions to make when it comes to optics for this rifle. Its not a hunting rifle, so the standard 3-9 power isn't really ideal. As a .223 carbine, red-dots or four power optics are more common/tacticool.

The Vanilla Tavor

I actually never owned my Tavor in its factory condition.

Out of the box, a Tavor rifle comes with a meprolight sight attached directly to the barrel using a proprietary mounting system. The military version frequently uses the MARS sight, which features an integral laser system that zeroes with the red dot. The civilian version uses a light amplifier similar to an ACOG's illumination that is generally considered "too dim" in daylight.

I don't miss it.

Instead my Tavor came with a third party optics rail that still clamps to the barrel, but offers a section of picatinny rail up top. Flip up iron sights are built into the gas block and front hand-guard, with a spot of tritium in the front sight.

Its a good setup. Allowing for a variety of standard optics on the little section of picatinny. Its almost perfectly the length of an eotech, although operating the holo-sight's controls around the rear iron sight can be a hassle.

Where's this rifle going?

I own a Tavor TAR-21 rifle. Its without a doubt my favorite gun I've ever owned.

I've done a few things, and changed a lot. And I'm hoping this blog will be a record of how those changes have gone.
